A recent report from Brazilian Association of Financial and Capital Market Entities (AMBINA) shed light on investment and entertainment trends in Brazil.

According to the study, the phenomenon of online betting, including popular platforms like “tiger game” and “bets”, is now seven times larger than the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3).

This data comes from the seventh edition of Raio X do Investidor, an annual survey that seeks to understand the behavior of Brazilians in relation to different types of investments.

Surprising numbers in 2023

In 2023, around 22.4 million Brazilians participated in activities on online betting platforms, which represents approximately 14% of the country's population. In contrast, only 2% of Brazilians invested in stocks during the same period. Furthermore, investment in private and public securities attracted 5% and 2% from the population, respectively.

These numbers indicate that the number of citizens involved in online bettingand is considerably higher than those who participate in the stock market, with a ratio of seven to one.

The difference is even more notable when compared to the number of people who invest in private bonds (2.8 times higher) and in public bonds (seven times higher).

According to BP Money, of the 30.1 million betting app users, 5% place bets occasionally, 6% rarely and approximately 16% are frequent bettors, with a wide variation in social class among them.

The age group of young people between 16 and 27 years old showed a significant participation of 29% in online betting in 2023, while millennials (28 to 42 years old) represented 18% of the total.

Reasons leading to the growing popularity of these platforms include the ability to make money quickly, cited by 40% of users, and the search for a potentially greater return, cited by 39%.

These factors, combined with ease of access via mobile devices, have attracted many, especially men and young people, who are beginning to see online betting not just as a pastime, but as a form of investment.
